Meet George Lunn:
Marketing Executive & Keen Outdoor Explorer
As the seasons slowly change, so do our kit choices. George Lunn, our Marketing Executive, shares his passion for exploring new trails with friends, his adventure essentials and some crucial kit-care tips every outdoor explorer should know.
Do you have a favourite place to explore in the UK, and what makes it so unique?
Among many other places, I absolutely love the Lake District. My friends and I often escape to the Lakes on Friday evenings after work, driving up in a campervan to spend the entire weekend. Arriving in the dark and waking up on Saturday to the sound of sheep and adventure calling makes it feel so free.
Another cherished spot, away from the bustling crowds, is mid-Wales. A gem that not many seem to venture into, yet its beauty is unparalleled. Huge grassy moors stretch endlessly in every direction, hiding traces of civilization. It's my go-to destination when I crave a proper adventure, a journey into the heart of nowhere. It’s named the 'desert of Wales' because of how remote it is!
I actually prefer hiking as the temperatures cool. You dodge the crowds, and layering up is way easier when it gets chilly. I'm all about those local strolls in the Cotswolds, finding new hidden trails and then cosying up for a well-earned pub meal.
What essentials do you bring with you for exploring in changing seasons?
As the seasons change and temperatures start to dip, I always bring a light synthetic insulation layer. My trusty Montane Fireball jacket, a companion for years, serves me well on local walks and mountain summits. Another optional must-have? A hip-flask– perfect for lifting spirits during a chilly hike or celebrating a tough climb with friends at the peak!
My go-to hiking boots are the Scarpa R-Evo GTX – a pair I hold dear. They've carried me through the stunning West Highland Way and faithfully accompanied me on all my walking adventures. Alongside them, I treasure my Rab Electron Pro insulated jacket. After the hike, it's my refuge, wrapping me in warmth by the van or during camping nights under the stars.
When hiking the West Highland Way, as well as my essential clothing, camping kit, and backpack, a key piece of kit I absolutely relied on was my Lifestraw water filter. Because of Scotland's surprisingly warm April weather, staying hydrated during those 30km+ daily walks was paramount.
The Lifestraw proved invaluable – effortlessly drawing water from the lovely little streams and springs along the way. Plus, every time you fill up, your water becomes ice-cold - a nice bonus!
Being a coffee enthusiast, I need access to the proper stuff – even during wild camping or multi-day hikes. That's why investing in an Aeropress was a complete game-changer. Beyond outshining a cafetière in coffee quality, it's lightweight and compact. Tossing it into my rucksack means swift coffee mornings. There's an undeniable charm in a cup of coffee when out in nature, a bit of calm before you're ready to start exploring again.
Having outdoor kit that fits perfectly can make a world of difference. I once made the mistake of buying walking boots without a proper fitting, and let me tell you, on a multi-day hike, I ended up with these awful blisters all over my feet.
What should've been an amazing experience, turned into a pretty miserable one. I practically went through a whole pack of Compeed blister plasters every day! So, trust me, finding kit that fits spot on is absolutely crucial. It can flip your outdoor adventure from a struggle to a smooth and enjoyable.
In my opinion, the ultimate practical piece of kit is a quality waterproof jacket. It's an absolute game-changer, capable of transforming potentially dreary and rainy outdoor moments into feeling warm, dry and prepared.
Particularly in the UK, where the weather can be unpredictable, a reliable waterproof is undeniably the most indispensable piece of kit!
I make it a habit to clean my boots after each walk, and I'm diligent about having a bottle of Nikwax Spray On at home. This way, I can reproof my waterproof jacket and ensure it maintains peak performance whenever I'm out and about.
Plus, Cotswold Outdoor stores offer a footwear protection service. For just £4.50, this service protects your favourite walking boots from mud, water and UV rays in under 60 seconds and keeps them performing at their best – for longer.
Venturing into the great outdoors alongside my close pals, Sam and Lewis, is an absolute joy. With a decade of friendship under our belts, we get on like brothers. And I can tell they genuinely share my passion for the outdoors and are always up for an adventure.
They're actually a bit more adventurous than me, frequently nudging me beyond my comfort zone with longer hikes or a challenging scramble – just for good measure!
