Pennies

Protecting the Planet with The Climate Project

The Climate Project, launched by the British Mountaineering Council’s (BMC) Access & Conservation Trust, was set up to help fight climate change and protect wildlife. From moorland to seabed, together we’re taking action through strategic planting projects.

What Plants Will Your Pennies Grow?

Sphagnum Moss in the Peak District
This mighty moss transforms degraded peat bogs into thriving wetlands. It locks in carbon, reduces flood risk, prevents wildfires, and creates homes for wildlife. By replanting Europe’s most damaged moorland, we’re bringing life back to these precious walking spaces.

Seagrass in North Wales
These underwater meadows are carbon-capturing powerhouses, absorbing carbon faster than tropical rainforests. But we’ve lost 90% of British seagrass in the last century - since the 1980’s we’ve lost over 35%. That equates to around a football field every hour. Our planting projects help restore these vital marine habitats, improving water quality and supporting sea life.

Every Donation Makes a Difference

Each donation plays its part in restoring precious habitats.

£25 could plant one square metre of sphagnum moss, helping create a healthy moor.

£70 could build 1 metre of timber dam, installed in gullies to stop peat washing off the moor.

£150 buys equipment to test the water quality at site

What is Pennies?

Pennies is an award-winning fintech charity with an important mission: to protect and grow micro-donations, ensuring people have digital ways to keep donating the small sums of money that are so vital to charities.

As a trusted leader in digital micro-donations, Pennies has created a movement that encourages giving, offers businesses a powerful way to demonstrate social purpose, helps charities make a greater impact, and gives the public a way to donate without cash, as part of their daily lives.

In an increasingly cashless society, Pennies’ ‘digital charity box’ gives customers paying by card or digital wallet a convenient way to add a small donation to their purchase, when shopping with participating retailers.  Whether in-store, online or in-app, it’s a simple, affordable, data-free way to donate, with 100% of funds raised going to charity.

Millions of people are now using the digital charity box. To date, Pennies has enabled more than 100 million micro-donations, raising millions of pounds in much-needed additional income for charities in the UK and Republic of Ireland.  Together, payment providers, retailers and their customers are helping hundreds of charities make a meaningful difference to the causes and communities they serve.

Because micro-donations matter, now more than ever.
