Pennies

Making the outdoors accessible for all and protecting our happy places

Pennies is the leading charity working to protect and grow micro-donations for organisations like YHA. Pennies allows you to donate as little as one penny at checkout to support YHA’s work in England and Wales, so you can do your bit without breaking the bank. Collectively, these small donations really do add up. For our customers in Scottish stores Pennies allows you to donate as little as one penny at checkout to support Mountaineering Scotland and the Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland (OATS)

Why We’re Supporting YHA & Outdoor Citizens

The outdoors is a place of inspiration and adventure that should be open and accessible to all. However, barriers exist that prevent many from enjoying nature’s benefits.

We’re working with YHA to remove these barriers so that everyone can find their happy place in the outdoors. Through their community network – Outdoor Citizens – YHA enable marginalised groups to have better access to the outdoors.

We’re supporting YHA and Outdoor Citizens through Pennies – an award-winning fintech charity with an important mission: to protect and grow micro-donations, ensuring people have digital ways to keep donating the small sums of money that are so vital to charities. Because a few pennies make a big difference.

Through our donations, we aim to remove common everyday barriers faced by these groups, ranging from transport to kit, to walk leaders and accommodation. They’ll also provide vital partnerships, advocacy, training and grassroots community activity, transforming the outdoors into a place that truly does belong to everyone.

No matter how seemingly small, every penny adds up to provide greater opportunities for more people to access the outdoors...

£5 could fund the transport cost for someone to visit a National Park for the day.

£30 could support a local community group to purchase a waterproof jacket and trousers to loan to members of their community.

£150 could pay for a community volunteer to get vital navigation training so they can support more people in the outdoors.

It’s Up to Us

Step up and save the mountain trails we love to roam

Scotland’s upland paths guide adventurers to new peaks amidst breathtaking landscapes — our happy place in the mountains. We’re working with Mountaineering Scotland and OATS to ensure these trails stay accessible for future generations, so that everyone gets to experience Scotland’s beauty and they don’t just lead us to adventures, they’re also key drivers of the nation’s tourism economy.

Why We’re Supporting

Our goal is to raise money to restore 3.2km of degraded trail on the renowned An Teallach mountain. With a lack of government funding to maintain well-travelled routes across privately owned land, your donations will help preserve these cherished paths for future adventures. And every penny really does count...

£5 could pay for gloves and eye protection for volunteers and contractors.

£100 could build one metre of gravel path.

£1200-£1400 could fund material lifts with a helicopter for one hour.

What is Pennies?

Pennies is an award-winning fintech charity with an important mission: to protect and grow micro-donations, ensuring people have digital ways to keep donating the small sums of money that are so vital to charities.

As a trusted leader in digital micro-donations, Pennies has created a movement that encourages giving, offers businesses a powerful way to demonstrate social purpose, helps charities make a greater impact, and gives the public a way to donate without cash, as part of their daily lives.

In an increasingly cashless society, Pennies’ ‘digital charity box’ gives customers paying by card or digital wallet a convenient way to add a small donation to their purchase, when shopping with participating retailers.  Whether in-store, online or in-app, it’s a simple, affordable, data-free way to donate, with 100% of funds raised going to charity.

Millions of people are now using the digital charity box. To date, Pennies has enabled more than 100 million micro-donations, raising millions of pounds in much-needed additional income for charities in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Together, payment providers, retailers and their customers are helping hundreds of charities make a meaningful difference to the causes and communities they serve.

Because micro-donations matter, now more than ever.
